Commissioners create Milam County ESD

Milam County Commissioners took the first step toward the creation of Milam County Emergency Services District #1 on Monday.

During a regular meeting, commissioners voted 4-0 to officially create Milam County Emergency Services District #1.

Milam County in November held an election to let the people decide on creation of an ESD, which overwhelmingly passed.

The goal of the ESD will be to pay for and improve ambulance services here in the county.

The next steps will be to interview and appoint members to a board of directors to oversee the ESD.

During the meeting the commissioners also approved a contract with PHI for air ambulance services and appointed Precinct 3 Commissioner Art Neal as Judge Pro Tem for 2024.

They also approved the purchase of two used Ford Ranger trucks in the amount of about $60,000. Roughly $50,000 of that is being paid for with recently approved tax notes and the remaining $10,000 will come from the general fund.

In other business commisioners: approved utility installations and a variance request; adopted an interlocal agreement with Choice Partners Co-Op that will allow the Milam County Sheriff’s Office to purchase supplies; and tabled all bids for road and bridge materials - the bids were opened and accepted, though the Court will award bid winners at their next meeting.

Milam County Judge Bill Whitmire announced this week that the deadline to apply for either the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District Board or the newly created Emergency Services District Board is Dec. 22.

The POSGCD Board has five openings coming up, with two of those being Milam County seats and three being Burleson County seats.

The ESD Board has five total openings for Milam County residents only.

Whitmire said interviews with applicants will be held Dec. 27, with selections to those respective boards later in the day.
