Cameron ISD calls for May school board election; honors board members
The Cameron ISD board of trustees called for a May board election during a meeting Jan. 14.
The board authorized a general election for expiring terms for James Burks and Roy Martinez on May 2.
Filing for those two spots began Jan. 15 and will run through 5 p.m. Feb. 14. Anyone interested in filing for the election can pick up an application at the Administration Office, 304 E. 12th Street in Cameron.
Also on the agenda was a public hearing for Cameron ISD’s 2018-2019 Texas Academic Performance Report. Superintendent Kevin Sprinkles reviewed the TAPR with board members. The report is an overview of student performance in testing and other areas throughout the year. Sprinkles said the report will be on the district’s website for review by the public soon.
Sprinkles said the district is moving in the right direction and there are many good things going on, but there is still work to do to improve scores across the district, especially in reading and writing. He commended the teachers for their work and students achievement in mathematics at several levels.
During the meeting the board was also honored for School Board Appreciation Month. They were given gifts from each campus and students from the Cameron Junior High culinary arts program were on hand to present cakes they made for each member.
In other business the board also approved a new investment policy and named Business Manager Missy Giesenschlag as investment officer.
Sprinkles announced that the Yoe High prom will be held Feb. 1 and that Cameron Elementary will be hosting a Spelling Bee at the YHS PAC on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 6 p.m. The public is invited to watch. The winner will advance to the Regional Scripps Spelling Bee in Austin.
The board also voted to move the March meeting to March 16 due to Spring Break.
After closed session the board also voted unanimously to offer a probationary teaching contract to Britny Bench as a fifth grade teacher at CES; and voted unanimously to extend the administrative contract of Sprinkles by one year, maintaining a three-year contract from 2020-2023.
