Program celebrates Black History in Cameron

The 2023 Black History Program was held in the Cameron Ledbetter Park on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The program began with a prayer by Rufus Harden. After the prayer Harjarene Conerly kicked off the program with a speech.

In her speech she recognized the importance of Black History Month, and people who made contributions to make the month worthy of celebrating Afro-Americans. Angela White brought a powerful message about mental health and stigma within the black community. In her speech she also addressed her own issues that arose after the death of her father and how she received treatment for herself. Before she took her seat she left us all with the question what will you say when they (kids, grandkids, etc) ask “what did you do?”

After taking her seat she pointed out the importance of voting. LaKethia Sims spoke about her involvement with the community, and how she became invested in June 19th celebration. Before she took her seat she let her granddaughter speak about Martin L. King.

KWTX Morning Anchor Ke’Sha Lopez addressed the crowd with how she became a journalist and her career as a journalist. As a journalist she shared with us how she show case Afro-Americans leaders now that are making an impact and assisting others today. Before wrapping up the program I gave the floor to anyone in the audience to speak which led to John (Leon) Melton speaking about issues of the past in Cameron.

We concluded the program with everyone singing “Lift Every Voice” and closing prayer. Special thanks to: Mary Robinson, Freddy Townsend, Norma Williams, Christina Ewing, and Monica Swift.
