Milano drops one to Granger
The Milano Eagles (6-16, 2-5) opened up the second round of District 25-2A at Granger on Tuesday night with a 49-44 loss. Milano was up 13-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 21-19 at the half. The Eagles kept the game close, down five points at the end of the third 37-32, but could not close the gap. Christian Thurman and Cordell Spears each recorded a double-double on the night. Thurman collected 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, with Spears scoring 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Layne Telg put up eight points and Arthur Soto six. Mason Westbrook recorded three points. Milano tried to mount a comeback, but fell 57-40 to Holland on Friday night at Geneva Paceley Gym. The Hornets led 30-12 at halftime and 43-19 after three. The Eagles outscored Holland 21-14 in the final quarter, but could not complete the comeback. “In a game where Holland’s big man, Luke Frei (6-6, 230lb), dominated with 27 points, despite good aggressive defense from the Eagles,” head coach Kyle Edwards said. “(We) shot a woefully low percentage and fell behind early. We began to connect on shots late in the second half, but too late to matter in the outcome of the game.” Thurman put up 20 points to lead Milano’s effort. Westbrook hit three shots from beyond the arc for nine points. Hayden Weaver added eight points and Christopher Sootoo scored three points. Milano will host Mumford on Friday back at Geneva Paceley Gym and have an open date on Jan. 29.
