City moving forward with next phase of water project

The Cameron City Council awarded a bid for the next phase of water projects during its meeting Feb. 4. Council awarded a bid of $195,192 to LeeTech Solutions for the next phase of the CDBG grant wastewater project. This phase of the work will be done south of US 190 on Park, Orchard and Colfax and a small portion of First Street. The council tabled a request from the Planning and Zoning Commission to rezone the Oakland Heights Subdivision from commercial to residential. Councilmember Melissa Williams asked that the topic be discussed with the Planning and Zoning Commission the option of rezoning the properties south of Oakland Heights. City Secretary Amy Harris said a request was made because residents are concerned that a business could come in on any of the empty lots in the housing addition. Harris said this is just the start of the process. There will be a public hearing and the city will have to send out notices to residents within a certain distance of the neighborhood. Council voted to table the item and discuss with the Planning and Zoning Commission during a joint workshop meeting on Feb. 25. In other business council also: approved waiving dump fees for a community clean-up day to be held on Feb. 9 by the Cameron Chamber of Commerce; canceled the regular meeting on Feb. 19; and approved a resolution to finance a contract for a pipehunter sewer cleaner vehicle. The council will meet in a joint workshop meeting with the Planning and Zoning Commission on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. to continue discussions about the new zoning regulations. They will have a special meeting prior to the workshop at 5:30 on Feb. 25.
