Lady Dogs open up district play with win over Holland, 2-1

The Thorndale Lady Dogs (9-5, 1-0) opened up District 27-2A play on Monday with a 2-1 win over Holland. The Lady Dogs got on the board first in the top of the fourth. Madison Kelm punches a double to left field that scored Hannah Laurence, who reached on an error and had stolen second and third bases. Holland tied it up in the bottom of the sixth after back-to-back errors by the Lady Dogs’ defense. Thorndale got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Emilee Baker singled to left field to open the top of the night. She then advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and took third base on a wild pitcher. Riley White grounded out to shortstop, but Baker was able to score on the fielder’s choice. White tossed the win for the Lady Dogs, striking out 17 Lady Hornets along the way. The Lady Dogs went 3-2 in the Academy tournament over the weekend. On Thursday, Thorndale defeated Somerville 18-1. Laurence tossed with win and White had 4RBIs. The Lady Dogs then defeated East View 6-3. The game was tied at 3-3 when Thorndale pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh frame. On Friday, Thorndale fell to McGregor 9-7. Kelsey Kovar and Laurence each had triples. Baker absorbed loss for Thorndale, striking out three and walking four. The Lady Dogs rebounded with a 10-2 win over Academy. Thorndale put together 13 hits in the contest. White earned the win with 12 strikeouts and one walk. It was a different when the two teams met again on Saturday, with Academy besting the Lady Dogs 5-3. Amber Dee ripped a double, with White smashing two of her own. The Lady Dogs are scheduled to play in the Schulenburg tournament over the weekend. The team will continue 27-2A play on Tuesday when they travel to Milam County neighbor Milano.
