Yoemen sting the Hornets in 68-34 win
The Yoemen scored 33 points in the first quarter of Friday night’s game against Gatesville and didn’t look back doubling-up the Hornets to earn a 68-34 win at Yoe Field. The win takes the Yoemen to 2-0 on the season with one more test in Giddings on Friday night before beginning District play against Troy on Sept. 27.
The Yoemen scored on their first five drives of the game and scored 20 straight points before Gatesville provided an answer.
Wide receiver Kobe Young scored on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Braden Brashear only a minute and 44 seconds into the game. The first of his three scores on the night. Axel Martinez added the extra point to put the Yoemen up 7-0.
Wide receiver Jaidyn Sanchez would score on a 33-yard pass from Brashear and wide receiver Thomas Melton would score on a 29-yard pass from Brashear all before the half point of the first quarter. Martinez would add one extra point and miss another to put the Yoemen up 20-0.
Gatesville got its lone score of the first quarter on a 52-yard pass from quarterback Wesley Brown to wide receiver Carson Brizendine.
The Yoemen would add two more touchdowns before the end of the first quarter.
The first from Young on a 58-yard pass from Brashear and another on an interception run for a score from defensive back Billy Collier. The score was 33-7 at the end of the first quarter.
“We got started fast this week,” Yoe Coach Tommy Brashear said. “We have been working to improve on that. We feel like that held us back last season and we have been focused on improving that.”
