Milam County GOP holds precinct and county conventions

The Republican Party of Milam County held it’s 2020 Precinct and County Conventions on Saturday at the Williams Event Center in Cameron. 

Originally set for March, the conventions were moved to June 6 to accommodate for the social distancing requirements due to the coronavirus.

“Attendance was good and we were joined by several local and state elected officials and candidates for office,” Milam County GOP Chairman Bill Whitmire said. “Local officials and candidates in attendance included District Attorney Bill Torrey, candidates in the Precinct 1 Commissioner run-off current officeholder Opey Watkins and his opponent Henry “Hub” Hubnik, and Precinct 4 Constable Michael Moehling.”

State officials and candidates in attendance included, Sue De Villez, Regional Representative for the Texas Federation of Republican Women; Bill Fairbrother and Jo Miller, candidates for the State Republican Executive Committee; and Tom Maynard, Member of the State Board of Education. Representative Terry Wilson could not make the convention but sent a statement in his absence.

Convention delegates selected the Milam County GOP representatives to the Republican Party of Texas Convention in Houston to be held July 16-18. Those selected will have a chance to be elected to the Republican National Convention later in August. Delegates were elected as follows: delegates - Bill Whitmire – Milano, Robert Lane – Cameron, Sherri Billingsley – Cameron, Frank Middleton – Rockdale, Alan Gardenhire – Rockdale, Rebecca Luckey – Rockdale, Michael Moehling – Thorndale, Ashliegh Moehling – Thorndale, Kyle Nuttall – Cameron, Mary Nuttall – Cameron, Brian Harper – Rockdale and Marilyn Johnson – Thorndale; Alternates - Bill Torrey – Cameron, Opey Watkins – Cameron, Chuck Dart – Cameron, Judith Lane – Cameron, Paul Luckey – Rockdale, Michelle Hubnik – Cameron, Donelle Keen-Tomasick – Cameron, Melissa Cullen – Cameron, Melissa Gardenhire – Rockdale, Anne Harper – Rockdale, Karen McDermott – Cameron, and Henry “Hub” Hubnik – Cameron.

Delegates also voted on resolutions to send to the state convention for consideration to the State Republican Platform. Resolutions sent for consideration included topics such as Congressional Term-Limits, Unfunded Mandates, Gun-Free Zone Liability, the Renouncement of Racism, as well as Monument and Statue Protections. Resolutions will be forwarded to the Platform Committee at the state convention for consideration to be included in the updated Platform to be passed by the delegates at the convention.

The Republican Party of Milam County would like to thank all those in attendance for their participation in the election process.
