Alan Burton Farrar

Alan Burton Farrar, age 81, passed from this life to the next on July 10, 2020, at the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center in Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Farrar; and his daughters, Kathy Eyre of Kaufman, Christy Hassell of Lufkin, and Kim Roberts of Southlake, and their spouses; his stepchildren, Chris Frei of Boerne, Stephen Frei of Oshkosh, Wis. and Diane Quiroga of San Antonio, and their spouses; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Meldon and Bessie Farrar; his brother, Stanley Farrar; and his first wife, Dolores Farrar.

Born on April 26, 1939, in Harlingen, Alan spent most of his life in South Texas. He graduated from Mercedes High School in 1958. Alan honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1961-1965, during which he was stationed in San Antonio and Wiesbaden, Germany.

Much of Alan’s career was spent in retail management for HEB, Gibson’s Discount Center and Lakeland Mall in Marble Falls. He also tried his hand at several entrepreneurial endeavors, including owning a general store in La Feria and learning locksmith skills and auctioneering in his 50’s As a believer in the Gospel and a follower of Christ, Alan was a faithful church attendee, serving in numerous roles, including on the board of trustees of the First Church of God in Harlingen. He also attended the First Church of God in Austin and Marlow Baptist Church in Marlow for the last 15 years.

Alan was a great lover of animals, especially dogs, throwing toys for his beloved Boston Terriers for the last 30 years. He could often be found outside among farm animals including cows, chickens, goats, rabbits and turkeys. He was also involved in the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed participating in events to honor veterans and show his patriotism.

Services were held Thursday, July 16, 2020, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home. His body will then be interred at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria.

Memorials may be made to the Rockdale Veterans of Foreign Wars.
