City to resume penalties for non-payment on Sept. 1

The City of Cameron will resume with late fees, penalties, and cutoffs for non-payment of the Cameron utility bills on Sept. 1.

Customers can make payment arrangements to keep their account open.

The water bill mailed out on Sept. 1 will be due Sept. 10. The cutoff date will be on Sept. 20 at 4 p.m.

A 10 percent late penalty will be applied to accounts not paid in full on Sept. 11.  This 10 percent penalty also applies to customers on a payment plan.

Citizens on a payment plan will not be cut off if they are meeting the payment agreement.

Several utility vouchers have been issued by Hill Country Community Action; please confirm with Hill Country that your voucher will be paid.

The City of Cameron had their utility billing system compromised by ransomware earlier this year.

In the process of working to rebuild the system, April 2020 utility bills went out late.

City officials said every resident on the city water system should get 12 bills as there are 12 months in the year.

Because the city did not bill until late April, they are working to get caught up.

City Manager Rhett Parker said no one will be double billed, though there will be a shorter time period between billing due dates so that the city will be back on track by August.

The data collected from the meters is service from one month prior.

Between June and August, customers will get three separate bills instead of the usual two.

Parker said every resident will get these times are also extraordinary due to the pandemic. The city said residents can make payment arrangements if needed. No penalties or cut-off fees have been charged since February 2020.
