Rhoades returns to coach Yoemen

The Cameron ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a recommendation from Superintendent Kevin Sprinkles to hire Rick Rhoades as head football coach and athletic director on Monday night. Rhoades said he never imagined this opportunity would come and expected to retire from Gregory-Portland at the end of the school year. But he’s excited to be back reunited with the Yoemen.

”We are glad to be back. It feels like coming home," he said. "We’re going to go to work and put together the very best program we can, and that’s the approach that I’ve always taken. We were very fortunate when I was here before that we had a lot of success. Are we going to try and get to that level again? Yea, I want to get to that level again. Not only in football, but I hope that we can get all the sports to that level. ”

Rhoades spent seven years in Cameron running up an 82-17 record and taking the Yoemen to five state title games in seven years, winning three championships. He has spent the past five years at Class 5A Gregory-Portland, where he posted a 26-23 record with the Wildcats, but never made the playoffs.

Rhoades will return beginning Monday, Feb. 15. He will replace Tommy Brashear, who remains with the district. There were 39 applicants for the job.
