Susie Briones

Susie Galban Briones, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Brooks University Crossing Nursing Facility in Jacksonville, Fla.

Susie was born on May 11, 1929, in Thrall, to Juan Sr. and Felipa Galban. Susie was one of 10 children.

Susie married Felix Briones Sr. in 1952. To their union they added five children, 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.  After years of traveling the country as migrant farmers, they settled in Thrall.  Susie worked for many years at Intercraft Industries in Taylor, but most of her life was dedicated to caring for her family.

Susie loved to cook and was known during the holidays for her homemade tamales.  She cooked countless meals for family and friends and even those she didn’t know, assuring that no one ever left hungry or without something to take home.  She also loved to play Bingo and always seemed to come home with winnings every night. She would often take her grandchildren to share with them her love of the game.

Her family is thankful to have shared so many wonderful years with her and will cherish the memories made with her.  May her great faith lead her home.

In addition to her parents, Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Sr.; her oldest son, Felix Jr.; her daughter, Beatriz Zuniga; five brothers, and three sisters.

Susie is survived by three sons Andrew, John “JB”, and Catarino “Cat” (Rebecca).  But Susie greatest happiness in her life were her eleven grandchildren, with whom she had a special relationship with each, Anna Briones (Diane), Andres Briones, Armando Briones (Ashley), Stephen Zuniga (Jackie), Domingo Zuniga, Matt Briones, Mariahlynne Briones,  Anthony Briones (Jessica), Amanda Breidinger (Jordon), Mikayla Briones (Giovanni), and Joshua Briones.  She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren. Susie is survived by one sister.

The family wishes to thank Ms. Phyllis Davenport, her loving caregiver at home and all the wonderful staff at Brooks University Crossing Nursing Care Facility in Jacksonville, Fla., where Susie lived out her final days on earth.

Services for Susie will be held Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor, with visitation from 10-11 a.m., and the service to begin at 11 a.m.  Burial will be in Taylor City Cemetery.

Since Susie’s greatest passion was cooking for and feeding everyone, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Shephard’s Heart Food Bank in Taylor, https://www.shepherdshearttaylor.org/donate, or to a charity of your choice that helps feed the hungry.
