COVID UPDATE: Milam County sees record number of COVID cases

Milam County has recorded its 60th death due to COVID-19.

County Judge Steve Young said Tuesday night that the county also saw record cases this week.

“These deaths are preventable,” Young said. “The fix is the vaccine. Pfizer has been fully approved by the FDA and Moderna will undoubtably be approved soon.”

The county now has a vaccination rate of 41.45 percent or 8,743 individuals that are fully vaccinated.

“We are making progress and vaccination rates are up,” he said. “In fact, we vaccinated almost 160 people on Saturday. Please get vaccinated.”

The confirmed active case count in the county is 233, a record high. Three individuals were admitted to the hospital on Tuesday and 12 individuals are on ventilators. So far, 296 Milam County residents have been hospitalized since the pandemic began. All hospitalized do not have the vaccine.

There will be a vaccine clinic in Rockdale today, Sept. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1700 Brazos; and on Friday, Sept. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Gause at the Gause United Methodist Church, 204 W. Walnut.

Several classrooms across the county have been moved to virtual learning due to positive cases. A Milano kindergarten class and the third and fourth grade at Rockdale Elementary have been quarantined. So far no classes in Cameron ISD have been quarantined. There are 12 active student cases and three active staff cases in CISD per Superintendent Kevin Sprinkles.

In Trauma Service Area L, which includes Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, and Mills counties, 294 patients diagnosed with the virus were hospitalized Monday, filling 25 percent of available beds and accounting for about 30 percent of all patients hospitalized. One ICU bed was available Monday, according to state data.

In Trauma Service Area M, which includes Bosque, Falls, Hill, Limestone and McLennan counties 194 patients with COVID-19 were hospitalized Monday, filling 31 percent of available beds and accounting for about 39 percent of all hospitalizations. No ICU beds were available Monday, according to local data.

Statewide Monday, more than 68 percent of residents 12 and older had received one dose of vaccine and almost 57 percent were fully vaccinated.
