City votes to hire search firm to find manager

The Cameron City Council voted to hire a little help to select a new City Manager during a meeting Monday night.

The council voted to hire the search firm Strategic Government Resources to help them find their next city manager. 

The city has been on the search to select someone to replace former City Manager Rhett Parker for a while now.

The council voted down offering a contract to their first choice and then gave Mayor Bill Harris authority to discuss a contract with their second choice before then moving to hire the search firm. 

The council also heard a report from Cameron Industrial Foundation Director Ginger Watkins about the CEDC annual report during the meeting.

Watkins told council the report focuses on the actual projects undertaken in the prior fiscal year and the long term goals.

“We saw progress toward three of the five long term goals over the last year,” she said. “We saw progress toward building capacity to move forward with The Yards of Cameron through the EDA grant.”

The grant funds will provide improvements to Adams Avenue, which is budgeted in phase two of The Yards project.

She also said that TxDOT is moving forward on I-14 with a study to move forward with a divided highway through the county.

She said there was also progress on high speed internet in the city and that in the last year there has been interest in the downtown buildings that will be vacated when the county moves out of downtown Cameron.
