Nelson Ellison Barnes

Nelson Ellison Barnes, 52, of Cameron died Nov. 1, 2021, in a Harvey, Ill., hospital.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home.  Burial followed in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Barnes was born Jan. 7, 1969, in Cameron to Walter Lee McMeans and Brenda Rosemond.  He married Tammy French. Nelson attended school in Cameron before getting his GED. He had worked as a truck driver, something he loved doing.  

He is survived by: wife, Tammy French Barnes of Missouri; children, LaToya Pankey of Rockdale, Bobby Lockett of Cameron, Ja’Leaha Williams of Mississippi, and JaHari Nelson Barnes of Missouri; step-son, Cortezz Lucas of Missouri; mother, Brenda Howard of Cameron; father, the late Walter Lee McMeans; siblings, Felix Barnes Sr. and wife Cassandra of Cameron, Sonja Powell and husband Marlon of Cameron, Cedric Barnes and wife Rebecca of Houston, Bilal Abdul Shakur and wife Latarsha of Cameron, Vertasha Thomas of Granbury, Sharon Garrett of Crowley, Raven McMeans of Houston, David Mayberry of Rockdale, and Debra Wilder of Alabama, uncles, Alvin Rosemond and wife Unell of Bryan and John McMeans and wife Gloria of Greenville, Ala.; great aunt, Helen Melton of California; and grandchild, Layla Bobi-Rae Lockett; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; devoted friends, Debbie Barnes and Lenora Bell.
