Yoemen looking to return to playoffs in 2022
Last year, the Cameron Yoemen basketball team reached the area round of the playoffs, where they were defeated by the Lorena Leopards 67-60. This year, they hope to make it back to the playoffs and go even further. This year was the first time a Cameron basketball coach has been able to put up a playoff banner in the rafters since 2011 and Coach Chris Reid and his group plan to put up another one again this year.
“We are looking to improve the things that worked for us last season, while being more detail oriented and continuing to develop better skills and fundamentals,” Reid said.
Reid also feels his team is more seasoned as he returns six players to the roster with varsity experience, four of them are seniors, and they have five seniors in total. Those five seniors are Tate Stroud (the newest senior addition to the team), Ryan Muniz, Javoun Goldsby, Nolan Brashear, and Phaibian Bynaum.
“We have a very balanced roster with several players capable of making big contributions,” Reid said. “These kids have good chemistry and play well together, which makes them fun to coach.”
Last year, Reid was able to bring his team within reaching distance of the regional quarterfinals in a season that was like no other due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone had to make changes to their routine and no one was sure when a game would be cancelled or rescheduled due to a possible COVID spread. This offseason has been more like a regular offseason.”
“Thus far, this is considerably different from last year in that regard,” Reid said. “I pray everyone remains healthy and we have a complete season.”
Overall, Coach Reid feels his team this year shows promise as they look to have an even better season than the year before.
“I’m excited about this year’s roster,” he said. “They are a good group of kids who are ready to compete.”
They have already gotten off to a great start over the Thanksgiving holiday as they went on the road to defeat the Milano Eagles 89-73 in their season opener.
Phaibian Bynaum came out on fire scoring 18 points. Pharrell Hemphill was also great with 17 points and 11 rebounds. J.W. Hollas was close to scoring a triple double with 17 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds.
