Lady Yoe top Lexington and Caldwell in district play

The Lady Yoe basketball team came up empty against the Rogers Lady Eagles in close battle 43-38 on Jan. 4.

They would try to have better luck on Jan. 7 as they went on the road to take on the Lexington Lady Eagles. Cameron had a strong performance and came out on top over Lexington, winning 43-31.

The Lady Yoe started off slow and was quickly down 5-0. They broke the drought on free throws made by Mia Wimmer (11) for a score of 5-2, then tied it at 5 with a three pointer by Camryn Ward (22). The Lady Yoe took a 6-5 lead from another Wimmer free throw, then increased the lead to 10-8 with a three pointer by Ward. That would also be the score at the end of the first quarter.

Cameron scored on a transition layup by Kaly White (3) for a 14-8 lead. Lexington came back and made the score 18-17. Cameron would hold onto the lead at halftime as they went into the locker room ahead of the Lady Eagles 19-18.

The Lady Yoe started the third quarter strong with a 5-0 run. Lexington was not phased and came back to tie the game at 24. Cameron broke the Lexington momentum with a basket by Kyli Leftwich (15) for a 26-24 lead, which would also be the score at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Yoe began to pull away in the fourth quarter. One of those breakout scores was a putback layup by Aliya Salazar (30) for a 30-26 lead. That would be followed with a steal and transition layup by Claudia Campos (44) making the score 32-26. Cameron continued to widen the lead with a basket by Salazar for a score of 38-31. The Lady Yoe went on to win the game in Lexington 43-31.

“Our defense picked up in the fourth quarter,” Coach Destini Juri said. “Claudia Campos and Camryn Ward really pressured the ball causing Lexington to turn the ball over and get us some solid points.”

With this win, the Lady Yoe now have a district record of 2-2 and an overall record of 9-17.

Up next for the Lady Yoe was a home game on Tuesday, Jan. 11, against the Caldwell Lady Hornets. Coach Juri feels the best way to come out on top against Caldwell will be to get off to a better start in the first half.

“We’ve got to start stronger in the first quarter,” Juri said. “We are a solid second half team but we’ve got to come out with more energy from the jump.”

The Lady Yoe defeated by Caldwell 49-32.

Their next game will be a road game on Friday as they will take on the Academy Lady Bees. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
