Waste collection event planned for April 30

Milam County Commissioners approved a deal to help with a tire collection event and retained legal counsel to assist with another solar project coming to the county at a meeting on Monday.

Commissioners approved an interlocal agreement with the City of Rockdale to assist with a future tire clean-up event. The agreement says the City of Rockdale will pay up to $50,000 to reimburse the county for labor and equipment used during the event. No date has been set for this event.

A household hazardous waste collection event will be held on April 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Precinct 4 Building, 501 US Highway 79 in Thorndale. 

Accepting (at no charge) fluorescent bulbs/tubes, cooking oil, petroleum products, paints, pesticides/herbicides, antifreeze, acids/other chemicals, used oils, household cleaners, and batteries. Do not bring tires, electronics, fire alarms, smoke detectors, explosives, pressurized containers or brush. 

Event is open to residents of Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills and San Saba Counties. Please bring proof of residency. Sponsored by Central Texas Council of Governements.

Commissioners also approved various issues related to a new solar project entitled Cattlemen Solar II. They hired legal counsel and accepted an application for tax abatement, setting a public hearing on the matter for 5 p.m. on May 23. The project will be a $224 million investment.

County Judge Steve Young also updated commissioners on the progress of the new Annex saying that breakers have been received and installed and the parking lot is under construction. He said the county should be able to move in by early June.

There will be a Masonic Cornerstone leveling ceremony on April 23 at 2 p.m. at the Annex.
