White hits milestone as Lady Yoe sweep Clifton

The Yoe High volleyball team got back to their winning ways on Tuesday night with a big win over Clifton.

The Lady Yoe picked up a sweep of Clifton on the road. The Ladies swept aside Clifton 25-17, 25-22, and 25-10.

Senior Kaly White also reached a milestone of 1,500 assists as a Lady Yoe volleyball player.

The volleyball team hosted the Chaparral Lady Bobcats on Friday night. They were defeated 3-1. 

The first five points of the first set went to Chaparral. Cameron broke the drought with a kill by Ainsley Driska (4) for a 4-1 deficit. The Lady Yoe tried to stay in it with a kill by Lauren Harris (9) to make it a score of 8-5. The Lady Bobcats took control and Cameron fell behind 12-6. The Lady Yoe tried to stay alive with a kill by Driska for a 13-9 score, which was followed by a block by Sydni Smith (1) and Haley Tucker (6) to make the score 13-10. Chaparral began to pull away but Cameron got a kill by Driska for a 21-14 deficit. They would get an ace by Lindsay Talafuse (7) for a 21-16 score, but would still lose the first set 25-18.

“We simply did not expect their tempo and heavy swings along with their heavy serving balls,” Coach Elena Queen said. 

The first point of the second set went to Chaparral. Cameron went ahead and got an ace by Driska for a 4-2 lead, which was followed by a kill from Tucker for 6-2 lead. The Lady Bobcats came back to make the score 8-6. The Lady Yoe lead became 10-9, then the set was tied at 10, but they lost the lead 11-10, and their deficit became 16-12. The Lady Yoe stayed in the set with a graceful tip over kill by Kasara Brooks (5) for a 20-16 score. Cameron got back in the set with two straight aces by Tucker for a 22-21 deficit, then tied the set at 22 on a kill by Driska. Chaparral managed to hold on and win the second set 26-24.

The first point of the third set went to Cameron, but they fell behind 4-1. The Lady Yoe got an ace by Driska for a 6-4 deficit. Cameron would tie the set at 8 with a kill by Driska. Cameron would take the lead and then increased it 12-10 on a kill by Tucker, and went on to increase their lead to 17-10. That was soon followed with a kill by Smith to make it a 20-13 lead. The Lady Yoe continued to hold off Chaparral with a kill by Brooks for a 24-18 lead. The Lady Bobcats tried to make a run but Cameron held on to win the third set 25-19 on a kill by Tucker.

“The key to our success was that our serve receive efficiency was more consistent,” Queen said. “We made less errors, and our balls were hitting the floor.” 

The first point of the fourth set went to Cameron but they would fall behind 4-2. Cameron stayed in the set with a kill by Smith for a 4-3 deficit. Chaparral began to take control and Cameron fell behind 9-4 then 12-5. The Lady Yoe tried to still show some fight with a kill by Driska for a 14-7 deficit. She later added to that with two straight aces by Driska for a score of 19-12, but would still go on to lose the fourth set 25-17 to lose the game. Their next matchup was Tuesday on the road against the Clifton Lady Cubs.

“We are learning to hit a different gear in our playing,” Queen said. “We will start fast; we will be more intentional rather than reactive. We need to clean up our errors and this is the match we need to solidify the little things before starting district with Rockdale next Friday.” 

On Friday, the Lady Yoe will begin district play on the road when they take on the Rockdale Lady Tigers. The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
