Lady Yoe claim share of District title
The Lady Yoe volleyball team will be 19-3A Co-Champions along with Troy after a sweep of McGregor on Tuesday night. Cameron and Troy will compete in a playoff seeding match this Friday, Oct. 28, at at Temple High School starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Yoe volleyball team hosted the Lexington Lady Eagles on Friday, Oct. 21. The Lady Yoe came out victorious, winning a hard fought 3-2 match.
The first three points of the first set went to Cameron. They would get a kill by Sydni Smith (1) for an early 4-2 lead. The Lady Yoe then began to expand their lead with a kill by Ainsley Driska (4) to make the score 8-3. That was soon followed with a score from Haley Tucker (6) for a 11-7 lead. Lexington came back and tied the set at 16, then took the lead 17-16. The Lady Yoe came back with a kill by Tucker for a 21-19 deficit. Cameron fell behind 23-19, but tried to stay alive with a kill by Smith for a 23-20 score. It would not be enough as they would lose the first set 25-20.
The first point of the second set went to Lexington. Cameron would roar back with a score from Driska to take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Yoe would stay ahead with a kill by Tucker for to make it a 9-7 lead. The Lady Eagles tied the set at 9, then took the lead 10-9, and Cameron would fall behind 14-10. The Lady Yoe stayed alive with a dump off kill by Kaly White (3) for a 15-11 deficit. Cameron came back and tied the score at 17 on a big ace by White. The set stayed even until Cameron came up with a clutch kill by Driska to win the second set 26-24.
The first two points of the third set went to Lexington and Cameron fell behind 5-1. The Lady Yoe tried to fight back with an ace by Smith for a score of 7-5, but Lexington would widen their lead to 12-8. White kept the Lady Yoe in the set with an impressive kill to make it 16-11 Cameron trailing. Lexington pulled away and expanded their lead to 19-13, then to 23-15. Cameron would lose the third set 25-16.
The first three points of the fourth set went to Cameron. Lexington then scored three straight points to tie the set at 3. Cameron responded with two straight points aided with a kill by Driska for a 5-3 lead. Driska added on with an ace to make the lead 11-8. Lexington stormed back to tie the set at 12 and went up 19-16. Cameron came right back and got a big score by Driska to cut the deficit to 20-19, and they would then tie the set at 21. The Lady Yoe came up with a clutch kill by Tucker for a 23-22 lead and went on to win the fourth set 25-23.
The first point of the fifth and final set went to Cameron. They would fall behind but get a kill by Tucker for a 3-2 deficit. Smith would add in some defense and came up with 3 consecutive blocks to give Cameron a 5-2 lead.
“That was momentum for sure,” Coach Elena Queen said. “That really helped us. We’ve been working on blocking so much and sealing the net, that got us on fire. We came out of the fourth set super pumped too, and that just carried us in, and we knew in our huddle that we have to have this same energy in the first set. They know this, it’s just a matter of doing it.”
The good play later continued with another block by Kasara Brooks (5) for a 10-5 lead and the Lady Yoe increased their lead to 13-9. That was soon followed with a kill by Tucker for a 14-10 lead. The Lady Eagles tried to rally back but was stopped short as Cameron finished strong in the end to win the fifth set 15-13 to win the game.
Up next for the Lady Yoe was a road matchup with the McGregor Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday night.
“Their home crowd is a really great home crowd and they play very, very well,” Queen said. “They’re very scrappy, very incredible defensive team. So, we just know that we’re going to have to find the floor. Like tonight, we have to put the ball in places that they’re not. So, to do that, our hitters are going to have to be so much more intentional about where they’re going to put the ball rather than the ball in the hands of a blocker. That’s the hitters responsibility to put the ball elsewhere. I think we did that well and that’s what we’re going to have to do in McGregor.”
The Lady Yoe swept the Bulldogs 3-0, winning the first set 25-20, the second set 25-15, and the third set 25-12.
The Lady Yoe are set to play Troy for seeding on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at Temple High School.
