County records first fatality accident of 2023

A woman is dead following a fiery crash on Monday night.

This is the first fatality crash of 2023 in Milam County. It occurred near the Robertson County line.

Milam County Sheriff Mike Clore said deputies and emergency crews responded just before 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, to a major two-vehicle crash on FM 485 east near the Brazos River bridge and Milam County line. 

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Washko confirmed a 21-year-old Houston woman died in the crash. 

Investigators determined a westbound 2017 Volvo SUV driven by the woman attempted to pass when unsafe and crossed into the eastbound lanes where it struck a 2011 Ford F350 pickup driven by a 32-year-old Cameron man. 

Washko said the truck attempted to take evasive action and drove into the bar ditch to avoid a collision. The Volvo also attempted to return to the westbound lane but was unable and the two vehicles met head-on. The Volvo then erupted into flames, entrapping the woman and a dog. 

The confirmed identity of the Houston woman is currently pending. The crash investigation remains open and active.

Milano accident

Three people sustained injuries after a major crash early Monday morning near Milano. 

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Milano Volunteer Fire Department responded about 6:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, to a major accident on Highway 36 just south of Milano near the Milam-Burleson County line. 

Investigators determined a Mercury passenger car attempted to pass a Mazda passenger car when it ran out of room and struck the rear axle of an 18-wheeler. That collision caused the big rig to roll into the ditch and scatter debris. The Mazda then struck some of that debris in the roadway. 

One person was airlifted from the scene and two others were taken by ground ambulance. The roadway was blocked for about an hour while crews worked the scene.
