JUDGE: The spirit of volunteerism in Milam County

I normally attend the monthly meeting of the Milam County Fire Chiefs Association where we discuss many issues and challenges that our local Volunteer Fire Departments face on a daily and long-term basis. 

Like many volunteer organizations in Milam County, we discuss various issues like funding, supplies, fuel, and several others. While most of us can’t help personally with many of these items, almost all of us can help with one thing, giving our time. 

There are lots of places to serve, be it the Volunteer Fire Departments in Milam County, service organizations, youth sports, 4-H, booster clubs, veterans’ organizations, animal services, food pantries, churches, or any of the myriad of other organizations that are always looking for assistance. These organizations need our support so that they can help our neighbors, our families, our friends, and our county as a whole.

These are the people who mentor our youth, build our communities, and support us in our greatest times of need. 

When disaster strikes, these are the organizations that always seem to come to our rescue and provide the assistance we need, but that doesn’t happen in a vacuum. We all have to step up and do our part. For some that might mean contributing money, for others it might include the donation of materials or supplies, and for many of us that means giving our time.

Often, getting started is the hard part for people. Where to go or who to talk to can be a source of anxiety for many of us. But if getting started is the hard part, the reward of participating is definitely worth it. 

Helping people and our communities is the hallmark of a caring and civil society. 

In my opinion, we live in the finest county, of the finest state, of the finest country of the world and it’s the people of Milam County who make it so. Our values and beliefs here in Milam County call on us all to stand up and help each other. Every time we have something disastrous happen here in Milam County, it’s the people of Milam County who stand tall and act first and foremost to aid our own, and our neighbors.

There really seems to be two kinds of people in this effort, those who are helping, and those who want to. So, if you’re already involved, Thank You. 

And if you want to volunteer, it’s never too late. There are lots of ways to get involved, so get out there and help in your own way. Be it a little or a lot, every bit helps.
