American Legion holds ceremony for disposal of unserviceable flags
American Legion Edwin Hardy Post 9 held a Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags on Flag Day, June 14, at the Post home in Ledbetter Park.
Nearly 1,000 old, worn, ripped, or faded flags were presented to the Post for disposal.
After a short, dignified presentation, the first flag was ceremoniously placed into a fire. Members remained at the Post continuing the disposal late into the evening.
Flag Day is traditionally proclaimed each year by the U.S. President.
In 1944, the American Legion designated Flag Day as the most appropriate day to do a Ceremony for Disposal. Flag Day 2023 also happens to be the 100th anniversary of the forming of the original Flag Code, which is a set of rules for civilian flag courtesy.
