Milam County Row Crop Tour set for July 20

The 2023 Milam County Row Crop Tour will be held on Thursday, July 20.  Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with coffee and breakfast at the Johnson’s Corn Plot (County Road 427, Thorndale) with the program beginning at 8 a.m.

The seminar will offer 2 hours of CEU’s (1-IPM & 1-General) for renewal of private applicator license and certificate holders.

Speakers and topics will include tours of all the replicated variety plots in the morning including corn cotton and sorghum. Dr. Ronnie Schnell Associate Professor & Extension Specialist – Cropping Systems will give an update at each of the grain locations and seed company representatives will discuss their variety’s. Dale Mott , Cotton Program Specialist will discuss the Replicated Agronomic Cotton Evaluation (R.A.C.E.) trial and other updates pertaining to cotton growers.

The day will conclude at the Buckholts Community Center following the tour stops. Lunch will be provided by Thorndale Meat Market and speakers will include Ruben Hernandez, Milam County FSA Director to give a USDA/ Farm Bill Update followed by Dr. Mark Welch, AgriLife Extension Economist discussing the current situation of commodity markets and inflation within the industry. The event will conclude at 1:30pm with door prizes and CEU certificates.

Central Texas has been fortunate this year with a wet growing season, however input costs are still at an all-time high and inflation continues to rise. This extension educational program hopes to answer some questions and provide some insight for producers in Milam and surrounding Counties.

Pre-registration is important for an accurate meal count and to assure we have enough printed material.  RSVP Deadline will be Monday, July 18.
