Lorton to be honored with Congressional Veterans Commendation

A Cameron man will soon be honored for his community service. 

United States Congressman Pete Sessions will award retired US Army Sergeant 1st Class Jerry Lee Lorton with the Congressional Veterans Commendation on Nov. 4 at 3:30 p.m. in Taylor. 

He will be honored alongside two other Central Texas individuals. 

According to the commendation, Sessions said Lorton`s life reflects the hard work and dedication that exemplifies the best of Central Texas. 

Lorton entered active duty in 1977 and embarked on a 2-decade career in the military, taking part in 5 overseas tours. He was recognized for expert marksmanship with rifle, pistol, and grenade, he earned an Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award), National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Master Aircraft Crewman Badge, and an Air Assault Badge. 

After leaving the service, he dedicated his life to community service and served as a volunteer firefighter with Cameron Volunteer Fire Department. He is also a deacon at Grace Church in Cameron and is part of the security team there. He also drives a bus for Cameron ISD and serves as Commander of Cameron VFW.
