Sugarloaf Mountain Purchase

During a ceremony Tuesday afternoon, the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma finalized the purchase of Sugarloaf Mountain in collaboration with the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association. The Tribe purchased back the land with help from private landowners and others in a joint effort to transform the small mountain into a historical park. Officials said they acquired the mountain in its entirety to ensure public access to the site. The first of its kind partnership will guarantee conservation of the 60-acre site. Roughly 100 community members and elected officials were on hand for the ceremony. The Milam County Historical Commission was also on hand.
