Yoemen finish in fourth in Cameron Tournament

The Cameron Yoemen basketball team hosted the Cameron Classic tournament Dec. 7-9. They finished with a record of 3-2 and finished in fourth place. 

Cameron played two games on Thursday, the first game coming against the Milano Eagles. The Yoemen handily defeated Milano 50-30. 

The second game was against the Mumford Mustangs and Cameron won 50-45. 

The Mustangs opened with a three pointer to go up 3-0, then Cameron answered with a free throw followed with a basket by Brayden Williams (11) off an assist by Damon Flemings (5) to tie the game at 3. Mumford responded with an 8-2 run to lead 11-5. The Yoemen stayed aggressive with a spinning layup by Cody Webb (12) to close the gap to 12-9 off an assist by Kason Goolsby (3). 

The first quarter ended with Cameron trailing 14-9. The first points of the second quarter came from free throws by Braylan Drake (1) to trail 14-11. The Yoemen closed the deficit with a big three pointer by Flemings to make the score 18-16. Webb kept the deficit at 2 with an offensive rebound and a layup to make the score 22-20. That was soon followed with a layup by Flemings to tie the game at 22 and a fastbreak layup by Goolsby to take the lead 24-22. Cameron went into halftime leading 27-26 after a buzzer beating basket by Mumford. 

Mumford took the lead 28-27 to start the third quarter with a basket, then Cameron answered with a layup by Webb to take the lead right back 29-28. The Yoemen gained some separation with a layup by Williams to take a 33-29 lead. Mumford came back to make the score 35-34 then regained the lead 36-35. The third quarter ended with the score tied at 36. The first points of the fourth quarter came from free throws by Webb for a 38-36 lead. Cameron got some clutch points on a big three pointer by Drake to stay ahead 41-39. The Yoemen stayed ahead with a clutch layup by Webb to make it a 45-43 lead, and they would hold strong with great defense and solid free throw shooting to win the game 50-45. 

The Yoemen played one game on Friday against the Columbus Cardinals. Cameron came out on top, winning 52-51 in a hard-fought game. With that win, Cameron moved into the championship bracket. 

Cameron took on the Lake Belton Broncos on Saturday and were defeated 75-41. Later that day, Cameron had another matchup with the Mumford Mustangs in the third-place game. Cameron was defeated, losing 66-47 to finish in fourth place.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, Cameron traveled to take on the Columbus Cardinals. Cameron fell to the Cardinals 74-72 in a double overtime heartbreaker. 

With this loss, Cameron now has a record of 8-6. Up next, the Yoemen will come back home to host the Jarrell Cougars. The game will be on Friday, Dec. 15, and tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
