Yoe Cosmetology learning by doing

The Yoe High Cosmetology Department is ready to offer its services to the community.

The department will begin offering services such as shampoo and blow dry, basic cut, basic color, and nail services.

The first date for the offerings is Jan. 25. The services will continue to be offered on Thursday nights for the rest of the semester.

Cameron ISD began offering a Cosmetology track to students last fall and 40 students are already enrolled in the courses.

Cosmetology teacher Katrina Tanner said she and the students are excited to let the community see what they have been working on.

“We have a good core group of students,” she said. “Our appointments will be by appointment only and we will offer limited services, but hope to offer more as we gain confidence in our skills throughout the semester.”

The freshmen and sophomores in the department will be certified in hair, skin and nails by the time they graduate from Yoe High. Juniors will be certified in nails. Seniors will gain their lash certification.

The certifications are based on hours in each course.

“Our students will be ready to go when they graduate,” Tanner said. “They will get their certification before they graduate.”

She said that by the last semester of their senior year they will begin working on the business side of owning or working for a salon and the students will have salon hours so they can see exactly how their skills can be applied in the real world. The last month each student will have a job in the public.

“Our goal is to make confident student who are ready to work and be in the salon,” Tanner said.

They will offer several things on Salon Night at Yoe High on Thursday nights including: shampoo and blow dry, basic hair color, basic hair cuts, manicures, pedicures, acrylic, dip nails and gel polish.

Tanner said students are working on layering, and color application and they will add services as they perfect their skills.

Tanner said she already has this week’s appointments filled.

She and her students are excited to offer the community these services.
