Milam County Tax Office closed until May 15

The Milam County Tax Office and DMV are currently closed, but will reopen on July 15.

In a statement last week, County Judge Bill Whitmire said that with the retirement of the former Tax Assessor-Collector and the departure of her entire staff, The county was working to replace that staff and get things running again.

Currently, the Tax Office will be closed until July 15 so new Tax Assessor-Collector Melissa Fritz can hire a staff and get that staff through training next week to be able to serve everyone.

In the interim, tax payments can be made in the drop box at the Milam County Annex front desk.

Most DMV and car title issues can be handled via the TxDMV.gov website.

Whitmire said that due to state law, there is not much the Commissioners Court nor the County Judge could have done to avoid this situation as each elected official is in complete charge of their own department. That means that there was nothing to be done while the former officeholder was still in office.

Whitmire said that it is unfortunate that this situation occurred, but in talking to the new Tax Assessor-Collector I feel confident that her and her office will truly be working to get this office back up and running as soon as possible.
