This week in Milam County

There is lots going on in Milam County right now so I thought I would spend this week’s article catching everyone up and some of the happenings.

Of course, we know this weekend is the Rockdale Fair weekend and it’s exciting for everyone, but did you know there is an airshow in Cameron Saturday as well. Sometimes it seems everything happens at once around here. Last weekend was the Rockdale Fair Pageant as well as the Steak, Stein, and Wine Festival in Cameron.

Just like before I took office, the Nurse and I always try and split our time between all the events in the county, but sometimes that gets a little tough. As I travel around the county, I am often amazed at how many people don’t always know what’s going on in the other parts of the county.

We are truly blessed to live in such a diverse county with so much to do on a constant basis. Take some time and check out the other parts of the County.

This week in County Government, we have several things we need to touch on. This morning we had a Commissioners’ Court meeting, and we interviewed candidates for the job of Milam County Fire Marshal. We had two good candidates, and the commissioners requested tabling this until the Commissioners’ Court meeting on the 28th of October to make a decision. The Commissioners want to sit with the two candidates and get to know them better.

There are two ESD board member terms expiring on Dec. 31 so we will be interviewing candidates for these positions on Nov. 12 and 13. Last year we learned a lesson by only holding interviews for one day, so this year we expanded it to two days to give folks the opportunity to come in and interview. So far, we have six candidates, but it’s not too late to get your application in to be considered for a position on the board. Contact my office at (254) 697-7000 or email me at bwhitmire@milamcounty.net for an application.

I have had several folks inquire about the meetings held by the ESD Board of Directors. These meetings are open, and the public is welcome to attend. Their next meeting will be held on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at the fire station in Milano. This is the time to meet the board members and have them answer your questions directly. I know many folks have questions, but very few have attended the meetings. So, if you want to know what’s going on go by and check it out.

Our updated Subdivision Regulations are nearing completion. With the Postoak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District passing their new rules, one of the main items we looked to include in our regulations is now settled and we are a step closer to a new and more comprehensive regulation. A regulation that will better serve Milam County and make these new developments safer and more secure not only for those in the new subdivision but also for those living near these new subdivisions.

The Presidential Election is here with Early Voting actually starting this coming Monday, Oct. 21. Early Voting will continue from the 21st until the 1st of November with Election Day being Nov. 5. Early Voting sites will be in Rockdale at the Patterson Center, in Thorndale at the Veterans Memorial Hall, in Buckholts at the Community Center, and in Cameron at the Milam County Anex. Times for Early Voting, sample ballots, and the address of the Early Voting sites can be found in this paper or on the Milam County Elections site at milamcounty.net.

Please get out and vote. Four years ago, around 40 percent of the voting eligible folks in Milam County voted. That number should be closer to 80 percent. So, if you truly want your voice heard – GET OUT AND VOTE!!
