Milam County Commissioners to discuss tax collections

The Milam County Commissioners met on Jan. 13 for their regular scheduled meeting and took care of several items.

Milam County Judge Bill Whitmire said that the county will hold Town Hall Meetings in the next several weeks to get the public’s comment on the possibility of moving tax collections from the Tax Office to the Milam Appraisal District. Commissioners will take up that topic during the Feb. 10 meeting.

Commissioners had previously voted to discuss this topic at the end of 2025, but moved the item up to the Feb. 10 agenda in late December.

It was brought up that other counties collect ad valorem taxes differently than we currently do here in Milam County last year.

Of the 254 counties in Texas, roughly 100 collect their taxes through the Tax Assessor-Collector’s (TAC) office as we currently do here in Milam County, about 100 collect them through the County Appraisal District (CAD) office, and the remaining do it in various forms where some of the larger counties allow for the individual taxing entities to collect their own taxes.

Milam County Chief Appraiser J. Ryan Nichols spoke to commissioners last March about moving collections.

He said moving collections to his office will put all tax related things under his office.

Moving the collections will not eliminate the need for the Tax Assessor/Collectors Office. They will still do vehicle registration and all other tasks they do.

Commissioners also approved a Mass Gathering Permit for Catalyst Collective for the Burning Flipside event to be held April 24-27 at Apache Pass Event Center by a vote of 3-1 with Commissioner Henry Hubnik voting against it.

In other business commissioners also: approved a variance application form Jennifer Graham on PR 3591 in Gause; took action to update the Milam County Wildfire Protection Plan; approved the adjustments to the plat for the Sandow AMLC Subdivision Phase 1; awarded bids for road and bridge material; approved the bond for Milam County Fire Marshal; approved transferring $30,000 from the unclaimed property capital credits fund to Milam County CASA to make up the difference in the requested Child Safety Fees from Vehicle Registration Fees; approved a variance application from Sypert Branch Solar LLC on CR 104; and approved an amendment to the LGS Contract to provide full licenses for Brian Price and Brandon Dakroub.
