Yoemen fall to Rockdale, Lexington
The Cameron Yoemen boys’ basketball team returned home to host the Lexington Eagles on Friday, Jan. 10. Cameron was defeated by Lexington, losing 77-38. The Yoemen remained home to host the Rockdale Tigers on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The Yoemen were handily defeated by Rockdale, losing 80-28.
Cameron trailed Rockdale early, falling behind 4-1, but showed grit with a basket by Damon Flemings (5) to make the score 4-3. Rockdale responded with a 9-2 spurt to pull ahead 13-5. The Yoemen ended the slump with an offensive rebound and a layup by Kelton Driska (15) for a 13-7 deficit. The first quarter ended with Cameron trailing 18-8.
The first points in the second quarter for Cameron came from a three point make by Flemings for a 22-11 deficit. That was soon followed with a basket by Andrew Castillo (33) to close the gap to 22-13. The Tigers surged ahead to lead 31-15, but the Yoemen broke the drought with a layup by Driska to trail 31-17. Cameron went into halftime behind 34-17.
The third quarter was tough for the Yoemen as they were outscored 24-5 to trail 58-22. The fourth quarter was even tougher, being outscored 22-6 to lose to Rockdale 80-28.
With this loss, Cameron has a record of 3-18 and a district record of 0-5. Up next, the Yoemen will travel to take on the Little River Academy Bumblebees. The game will be on Friday, Jan. 17, and tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
