Steven Burtis Henderson
Steven Burtis Henderson, age 71, of Palestine, passed away on Monday, Feb. 14.
He was born Aug. 21, 1950, in Palestine, to Plez Burtis Henderson and Dorothy Rogers Henderson.
Steven graduated from Palestine High School in 1969 and went to work for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He worked at many units around the state for approximately 25 years. He attained the rank of major before leaving to become a representative for the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees.
Steven retired in Cameron and went to work for the Milam County Sheriff’s Department. Health issues brought on his final retirement, and he moved back to Palestine in early 2019. Steven then devoted himself to growing vegetables and cheering on the Texas Longhorns.
He is preceded in death by his father, Plez Burtis Henderson, in 1991.
Steven is survived by his mother, Dorothy Henderson of Pert; sons, Mitchell Mays Henderson of College Station, and Seth Henderson of Austin; brothers, Roger Henderson and wife Mary of Tyler, and Gary Henderson and wife JoAnn of Sulphur Springs. Steven is also survived by an aunt, two nephews, three nieces, and many cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate Steven Henderson’s was held on Feb. 20 at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Pert. Rev. Jacob Dunn officiated the service.
Honorary pallbearers were Roger Henderson, Gary Henderson, Kevin Kanetzky, Rand Henderson, Wayne Newton, and Jerry Paul Rogers.
