Bulldogs end run in basketball playoffs
The Thorndale Bulldogs ended their run in the playoffs last weekend. They were victorious over Stockdale on Friday before falling to Flatonia on Saturday.
The Bulldogs traveled to Johnson High School on Friday, March 3, for the Regional Semifinals. They took on the Stockdale Brahmas and were victorious, winning 60-49.
Both teams went scoreless the first couple minutes. Thorndale got on the scoreboard with a three pointer by Blake Roberts (1) for an early 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs began to extend their lead with a three point shot by Kaden Kovar (4) to make the score 10-6, and expanded their lead to 15-6. The Bulldogs stayed aggressive with another three pointer by Roberts, making it a 21-12 lead. The first quarter ended with Thorndale winning 23-15.
Stockdale began the second quarter with a 4-0 start, but Thorndale answered with a layup by Clason Beasley (3) to maintain the lead 25-19. The Bulldogs would score from distance again with a three pointer by Kovar to make the score 32-19. The Bulldogs continued to push ahead with a layup by Beasley for a commanding 38-20 lead, which would be the score going into halftime.
The Brahmas started the third quarter hot with a 7-1 run to make the score 39-27. The Bulldogs responded with a layup by Beasley for a 41-27 lead. Thorndale would get back on track and score with a layup by Beasley to grow the lead to 45-29. They would extend it more with a successful three point play by Roberts, making the score 48-31. The third quarter ended with Thorndale way ahead of Stockdale 48-33.
The fourth quarter for Thorndale began with a three point shot by Kovar for a 51-35 lead. The Bulldogs stayed aggressive and grew their lead to 55-37. The Bulldogs would begin to drain the clock and went on to win 60-49 to advance to the regional finals. Clason Beasley had a strong performance with 12 points. Roberts was also incredible with 15 points, making 2 three pointers. Kaden Kovar was amazing with 25 points, making 7 three pointers.
With that victory, the Bulldogs were one win away from their first state tournament appearance since 2018. They took on the Flatonia Bulldogs on Saturday, and were defeated 65-54 to bring their season to an end.
