Kovar named new boys’ athletic director for Thorndale ISD

There will be a different, but familiar face leading the Thorndale Bulldogs on the football sidelines next season, as John Kovar is the team’s new gridiron coach.

The announcement was made on Friday, as Kovar also takes over as boys’ athletic director.

He is replacing Scott Hawkins who is leaving Thorndale after five years to become an assistant football coach at Class 4A Liberty Hill.

Kovar first came to Thorndale in 2013 and took its boys basketball team to the UIL state basketball tournament three times.

When asked about his new position, Kovar is excited about the challenge.

“I am very excited about this new adventure.  I have already begun working and trying to get everything prepared for the next school year,” Kovar said.

He added that they are working with the athletes during current school closure to stay in shape and on track for next school year.

“We are currently sending them instructions and communicating with kids through emails,” Kovar said.

With Kovar moving from basketball to football, TISD now has to search for a new head boys’ basketball coach.  Hawkins’ departure also leaves open the school’s powerlifting coaching position.

“We are working on hiring one coach right now,” Kovar said.

Hawkins had previously been an assistant at Liberty Hill prior to coming to Thorndale.  Hawkins was 27-28 overall in five seasons with the Bulldogs. His last two teams reached the playoffs and had a combined record of 17-5.
