Lady Dogs victorius against Granger, fall to Thrall
The Thorndale Lady Dogs softball team hosted the Granger Lady Lions on Monday. Thorndale was victorious against Granger, winning 6-2.
The Lady Dogs got on the scoreboard first in the second inning with two runs.
Emily Reeves pulled off a little two out magic and drove in two when she singled on a line drive to left field. Thorndale added on with three more runs in the third inning. The big inning was led by a single from Allison Owen, a double by Aiyanna Stevenson, and an RBI groundout from Hailey Meadors to drive in runs during the inning.
“That’s kind of been our deal the whole year,” Coach Lance Betak said. “We’ve had plenty of people on base, just not coming up with enough hits to score people when we had girls in scoring position. It kind of happened tonight. We had a few opportunities that we did cash in on early, but in almost every inning I think we left at least one runner on base and sometimes we left two runners on base. So just one or two more hits and we could’ve busted it open and scored 9 or 10. So Emily coming big up with two outs scoring two runs there in the second inning was big for us. We had a couple other hits that were big also.”
Thorndale collected eight hits on the day. Allison Owen, Raeghan Carlson, and Aiyanna Stevenson each had multiple hits for Thorndale. Karis Ginn led things off in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Dogs. Ginn allowed three hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out ten.
“She can throw inside, throw outside,” Betak said. “She can throw pretty hard and she has a little bit of an off-speed pitch. There’s so many swings and misses too. People can foul them off or whatever else and a lot of times bunt to her, but there’s so many swings and misses.
Karis was also aided with great defense to aid her in her two run outing, leaving many Granger runners on base throughout the game.
“When they had first and second in the fifth inning, and they hit the ground ball to Reagan at third and she tapped third and went to first to get the double play to end that inning, which looked like it had a possibility of being a big inning and we kept them to only one run that inning that was big for us,” Coach Betak said. “We had a good running catch by Hailey Meadors and Haleigh Moehling came running in and had a diving almost catch. She got her glove underneath it, but when she hit the ground, it popped out. Overall, everybody did their job.”
The Lady Dogs went on the road the very next day to take on the Thrall Tigerettes. Thorndale was stunned by Thrall, losing 8-6. Thorndale had an 8-3 lead going into the sixth inning when they allowed five runs to cost them the game.
With this loss, the Lady Dogs have a district record of 9-3. Up next for the Lady Dogs will a road game against the Bartlett Lady Bulldogs. The game will be Friday and first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
