Franklin ends Yoe basketball playoff run
The Cameron Yoemen basketball team traveled to College Station on Tuesday night for the Bi-District round of the playoffs. They took on a familiar playoff opponent in the Franklin Lions, and were defeated 50-47 in a game that went down to the final seconds.
Cameron started the game strong with a floater by Kason Goolsby (3) for an early 4-2 lead. Goolsby added to that with a three pointer to push the score to 7-2. Franklin roared back to make the score 7-6, but the Yoemen responded with a layup by Damon Flemings (5) to make the score 9-6. Cameron continued their scoring spurt and expanded the lead to double digits at 16-6. The first quarter ended with Cameron ahead 18-8.
The first points for Cameron in the second quarter came from a layup by Goolsby to make it a 20-9 lead. The Yoemen continued to keep their big lead with a floater by Goolsby to give them a 28-19 advantage. Cameron went into halftime ahead of Franklin 30-22. Franklin started the third quarter strong and clawed their way back to make the score 30-29. Cameron broke the drought with a free throw by Flemings to make it a 31-29 lead, but the Lions kept coming and tied the score at 32. The Yoemen tried to stop their momentum with a big layup by Cody Webb (12) to retake the lead 34-32, which would be the score at the end of the third quarter.
The first points of the fourth quarter came from a bucket by Goolsby for a 36-32 advantage. Franklin responded with a 9-2 run to go ahead of Cameron 41-38. The Yoemen answered back with a huge three pointer by Flemings to tie the game at 41. The rest of the quarter remained very even, but in the last few seconds, Cameron found themselves down 50-47.
The Yoemen had a chance to send the game into overtime with a three-point shot from Braylan Drake (1), but it was tipped, and Cameron would lose 50-47 to bring their season to an end.
With this heartbreaking loss, Cameron now finishes their season with a record of 17-17 and a district record of 7-7.
