Lady Yoe crowned champs of Cameron Classic

The Cameron Lady Yoe basketball team were crowned tournament champs in the Cameron Classic Tournament on Dec. 7-9. They went undefeated with a record of 4-0 and were crowned the tournament champions. 

The Lady Yoe played one game on Thursday against the Florence Lady Buffs. Cameron dominated Florence, winning 42-14. Cameron played one game on Friday as well against the Holland Lady Hornets. The Lady Yoe handily defeated Holland 43-27.

With this win, Cameron moved into the championship bracket. Cameron took on the Valley Mills Lady Eagles on Saturday and were victorious, winning 52-46 in a come from behind fashion. 

The Lady Yoe began the game strong with an 8-0 start and didn’t allow a point until Valley Mills scored a three pointer at the 2-minute mark to make the score 8-3. The Lady Eagles continued to claw back and tied the score at 8. Cameron temporarily halted their momentum with a basket by Ward to lead 10-8. Vally Mills continued their hot streak and took the lead 13-10 and led Cameron at the end of the first quarter 14-10. 

The first points of the second quarter came from a three pointer by Aubree Brashear (3) to close the gap to 14-13. The Lady Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to lead 20-13. The Lady Yoe fought back with a run of their own aided by another three pointer by Brashear to make it a 20-17 deficit. Cameron went into halftime trailing 23-17 after a buzzer beating three pointer by Valley Mills. 

The first points for Cameron in the third quarter came from a fast break layup by Yierra Flemings (23) for a 26-19 deficit. The Lady Yoe kept fighting with a fast break layup by Camryn Ward (22) to make the score 29-24. Brashear continued to show her range with another three pointer to trail 29-27. The third quarter ended with Cameron trailing 37-32.

The first points of the fourth quarter came from a layup by Flemings to make it a 37-34 deficit, but Valley Mills began to pull away to lead 45-38. The Lady Yoe clawed their way back to make it a one score game with a huge three pointer by Ward for a 46-45 deficit. Cameron completed the comeback with a fast break layup by Flemings to take the lead 47-46. Cameron continued to stay hot with a layup by Amani Fields (24) off a nice assist by Flemings for a 50-46 lead and went on to win 52-46. 

The Lady Yoe advanced to the championship game against the Stephenville Honeybees. Cameron handily defeated Stephenville 47-29 to finish as the tournament champions.

Cameron remained home on Tuesday, Dec. 12, to host the Rockdale Lady Tigers for their district opener. The Lady fell to Rockdale 35-27. With this loss, Cameron now has a record of 12-5. 

Up next, the Lady Yoe will travel to take on the Troy Trojanettes. The game will be on Friday, Dec. 15, and tip-off is set for 6:15 p.m.
