Lady Yoe get first district win
The Cameron Lady Yoe basketball team got their first district win of the year against the McGregor Lady Bulldogs on Friday, Jan. 13. Cameron won in a nailbiter 33-32.
On Tuesday night, they tried for two consecutive wins against the Rockdale Lady Tigers. The Lady Yoe came up short, losing 43-34.
Cameron started the game off well and went up 5-3. The Lady Yoe added on with a layup by Makayla Scott (44) for a 7-3 lead, which was soon followed with a three-pointer by Kaly White (3) for a score of 10-5. The first quarter ended with Cameron leading 10-7.
The Lady Yoe started the second quarter with a layup by White for a 12-7 lead. The Lady Yoe would stay ahead with a layup by Amani Fields (24) to make it a 14-10 lead. Rockdale clawed their way back and took the lead 15-14. The Lady Tigers tried to pull away but Cameron came up with a nice layup by Fields off a great inbound assist by Camryn Ward (22) to make it a 19-17 deficit, which would be the score going into halftime.
Cameron started the third quarter with a basket by Aubree Brashear (13) to tie the score at 19. Rockdale then went on a 6-0 run to go ahead of Cameron 23-19. The Lady Yoe crept back in and cut the gap to one point with a layup by Fields to put Cameron behind 25-24, which would be the score at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Yoe took back the lead in the fourth quarter with a fastbreak layup by Fields off an assist by Brashear to make the score 28-27. However, Rockdale would regain control of the game and with some clutch baskets to lead 36-29. The Lady Yoe tried to stay in the game with a layup by White for a 38-34 deficit, but it would not be enough as they would lose 43-34. With this loss, Cameron has a district record of 1-7 and an overall record of 4-19.
Up next for the Lady Yoe will a road match against the Troy Trojanettes. The game will be Friday and tipoff is set for 6:15 p.m.
