Lady Yoe get win over Lady Leopards
The Cameron Lady Yoe softball team traveled to take on the Rogers Lady Eagles on Friday, March 22. The Lady Yoe were defeated by Rogers, losing 9-5.
Cameron returned home on Tuesday, March 26, to host the Lorena Lady Leopards. Cameron was victorious, winning 4-3 in come from behind fashion.
The Lady Yoe started the game slowly and gave up two runs in the bottom of the first inning to trail 2-0. Cameron responded in the first inning with one run on a bases loaded walk earned by Peyton Polson to close the gap to 2-1.
Lorena responded in the top of the second inning with a bases loaded walk of their own to take a 3-1 lead. Both pitchers pitched shutouts for the next three innings, then Cameron came to life with scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead 4-3. The Lady Yoe got two runners on base then tied the score at 3 on a Lorena fielding error from a fly ball hit by Camryn Ward. Lindsay Talafuse later came up clutch and smacked a line drive single to left field, bringing in a run to take the lead 4-3.
“My message to the team at the bottom of the sixth inning was to take it one at a time and stay focused and to finish strong,” Coach Jordan Garvin said. “It was really nice to see the girls battle back and be the Lady Yoe softball team that was in the preseason. I feel like we found our way again and the slump is over.”
Zayda Spillers then clamped down in the top of the seventh inning with three outs on three batters to seal the victory 4-3. After allowing three runs in the first two innings, she kept her team in the game and didn’t allow another run.
“It was awesome to see Zayda struggle and go through adversity and be able to come and battle for her team,” Garvin said. “That’s what pitching is all about!”
Overall, Spillers allowed three runs on just four hits, all three runs coming in the first two innings. The Lady Yoe collected six hits in the game, Camryn Ward led the team with three.
With this win, Cameron now has an overall record of 12-10-1 and a district record of 3-4. Up next, the Lady Yoe will travel to Lorena for a rematch with the Lady Leopards. The game will be Thursday, March 28, and is set to start at 6 p.m.
