Lady Yoe softball drops tough one to Rogers
The Cameron Lady Yoe softball team lost a tough outing to the Rogers Lady Eagles on Friday 5-2.
Pitcher, Samantha Frausto (12), allowed a two out double, who then advanced to third on a steal. She was able to get out of inning on a fantastic snag catch by Lauren Harris (1).
Cameron was unable to score in the bottom of the first inning.
Frausto allowed a home run in the top of the second inning. She then allowed a two out single to the Lady Eagles, who advanced to second and then third base on two consecutive wild pitches. She was able to get out of that jam with a clutch strikeout.
The Lady Yoe tried to answer back but didn’t succeed in scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Frausto returned to the mound and allowed a one out walk, but the runner was caught stealing second base. Then she allowed another walk. This would lead to a pitching change in the third inning.
Peyton Polson (18) came in for Frausto. She allowed a two run double to make the score 3-0 Rogers. The third inning ended on a line out caught by Lindsay Talafuse (11).
Cameron had a leadoff single by Brooklyn McCall (8), then she stole second. The Lady Yoe couldn’t bring her home in the bottom of the third inning. Polson allowed a leadoff double in the top of the fourth inning on a base running error. Polson got the team out of the inning with some excellent pitching and stellar defense by Cameron. Cameron came to bat and put runners on first and second but couldn’t get the clutch hit to bring them home in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“Just no timely hitting, which comes and goes,” Coach Chris Sommerfield said. “It may not have been for us today, but it might be for us on Monday, and so you just got to make sure you do all the other things right so when that hitting comes, you’re fine.”
Polson would go on to pitch a shutout fifth inning. The bottom of the fifth inning started with a few mistakes on Rockdale’s side. McCall reached first base on an error from an outfield drop by the right fielder, shortly after, Hailey Tucker (6) reached first on a pop up dropped by the catcher. Kristyana Vargas (3) then reached first on a throwing error, sending McCall home for the first run of the game for Cameron. The Lady Yoe had a chance to get back in the game with the bases loaded but the Lady Tigers pitcher held her ground and the Lady Yoe were not able to capitalize on the opportunity, keeping the score at 3-1.
“I thought she was doing a good job of locating outside pitches and had a little movement and those are really tough pitches to hit,” Sommerfield said. “We finally started making some adjustments where we got some runs there towards the end, but when you can locate like that no matter who you are, you’re going to keep an offense in check and that’s what she was doing.”
Polson allowed a two run base hit in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 5-1. The inning would end on a groundout on the next at bat. Cameron tried for some late inning heroics with a two out triple by Tucker to send McCall home for the second run, making the score 5-2. That is all the scoring Cameron could muster as the top of the sixth inning ended on a line out to third. Polson pitched a clean seventh inning with the help of the defense by Harris and Talafuse making some fantastic plays. Cameron could not perform any last inning miracles in the bottom of the seventh inning and would lose 5-2.
“Well, I thought we did a lot of things well, the more we can play like we did tonight and some of those things can go your way, then you can win some games,” Sommerfield said. “I thought our defense played well and I thought we pitched well enough to win, and sometimes when you play good teams, they can beat you even when you play well. But the more often we bring the game like we did today, the better off we’ll be for sure.”
The Cameron Lady Yoe will head back into action next on Monday as they took on the Caldwell Lady Hornets.
The Lady Yoe would fall to Caldwell 8-7 in heartbreaking fashion.
Cameron couldn’t get things started as they failed to score in the top of the first inning. To the start the bottom of the first inning, Polson, the pitcher for Cameron hit a batter, then allowed a walk. She got a Caldwell hitter to ground into a double play. She then got out of the inning on groundout to the shortstop, handled by Harris.
Cameron came to bat and had a two out single by McCall, who advanced to second base on a wild pitch. They were still unable to score in the top of the second inning. The bottom of the second inning didn’t go too well as Polson allowed Caldwell’s first run on a line drive base hit. She allowed their second run on a fielder’s choice, then a third run on groundball hit. Her bad luck continued as she gave up a fourth run on a wild pitch (when a ball gets by the catcher).
After that, Sommerfield made a pitching change. Frausto would come in for Polson.
Frausto gave up a fifth run on a sacrifice fly out. The bottom of the second inning ended on a pop out to Harris. Cameron started the top of the third inning with back-to-back walks for Vargas and Talafuse. Cameron scored with a bases loaded walk to Nevaeh Billingsley (15) for the first run of the game for the Lady Yoe.
Cameron was able to get another bases loaded walk that Frausto earned for their second run. The top of the third inning ended on a strikeout to McCall. Frausto allowed leadoff walk. That walk would be followed by two more runs being scored for Caldwell on a line drive hit to centerfield. The bottom of the third inning ended on a line out.
The Lady Yoe would get base runners the painful way in the top of the fourth inning with two consecutive batters hit by a pitch, the players being Tucker and Vargas. Cameron would score with an RBI (runs batted in) double by Mia Wimmer (14) for a 7-3 deficit. This would be followed with another RBI line drive by Talafuse to make the score 7-4.
The top of the fourth inning ended on a pop out. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Polson allowed an eighth run for the Lady Hornets on a double. She escaped the bottom of the fourth inning with no other harm leaving the score still 8-4. Cameron was unable to answer back with a score in the top of the fifth inning.
Sommerfield made a pitching change for the bottom of the fifth inning. Billingsley came in for Frausto. She pitched a fantastic inning as she struck out two batters and got the final runner out on a throw from first to third base.
The Lady Yoe tried to pull off some two out magic with walks for Harris and Wimmer. They were not able to do so as the top of the sixth inning ended on a groundout. Billingsley gave the team one last chance and pitched a shutout sixth inning. Billingsley got the top of the seventh inning started on offense by reaching first base getting hit by pitch. That would be rewarded with an RBI single by Camryn Ward (4) to make the score 8-5.
Cameron tried one last attempt at a comeback with a bases clearing triple for Vargas to cut the deficit to 8-7. Sadly, the game would end on Vargas being thrown out attempting to score at home on a wild pitch, where the umpire called her out on a very close play at the plate. Unfortunately, the game would end with Cameron losing a tough loss to Caldwell 8-7.
