Lady Yoe top Lady Eagles for first district win
The Lady Yoe basketball team got their first district win over Rogers on Tuesday night.
They traveled to take on the Troy Trojanettes on Friday, Dec. 15. Cameron fell to Troy 41-36.
The Lady Yoe returned home on Tuesday, Dec. 19, to host the Rogers Lady Eagles. Cameron came out on top, winning 44-40 for their first district win of the season.
Cameron fell behind 3-1 early but answered with a 6-0 run aided with a successful three-point play by Yierra Flemings (23) to lead Rogers 7-3. The Lady Yoe grew their lead to double digits at 13-3 on a layup by Reagan Akin (2) off a nice assist by Camryn Ward (22). The Lady Yoe stayed aggressive with a three pointer by Aubree Brashear (3) to take a 16-7 lead, which would be the score at the end of the first quarter.
The first points in the second quarter for Cameron came from a layup by Flemings for an 18-8 lead. Rogers responded with a 10-0 run to tie the score at 18, but Cameron responded with a huge layup by Amani Fields (24) to break the drought and take a 20-18 lead. That was soon followed with a basket by Brashear to expand the lead to 23-19. The Lady Yoe continued that scoring run and came up with a fastbreak layup by Flemings to make it a 27-19 lead, which would be the score going into halftime.
The third quarter began sluggishly for both teams. The first points for Cameron came at the 5-minute mark on free throws from Ward to make the score 29-21. That was soon followed with a layup by Flemings to stay ahead 32-23. Cameron continued to increase their lead with a layup by Brashear off a nice assist by Ward to make it a 35-24 lead. The third quarter ended with Cameron winning 35-25. The first points for Cameron in the fourth quarter came from a huge three pointer by Akin for a 38-28 lead. The Lady Yoe kept the score at double digits at 42-32 with a big layup by Fields. The Lady Eagles scrapped their way back to close the gap 42-39, but Cameron held tough to secure the victory at 44-40.
With this victory, Cameron now has an overall record of 13-6 and a district record of 1-2. Cameron will not be playing again until after the winter break. Up next, the Lady Yoe will stay home and host the Lorena Lady Leopards. The game will be on Tuesday, Jan. 2 and tip-off is set for 6:15 p.m.
