Yoe soccer competes at Rockdale Tourney
The Cameron Yoemen boys soccer team participated in an in-season tournament hosted by Rockdale during the weekend of Jan. 9-11. The Yoemen finished the weekend with a record of 1-1-1.
Their first game of the tournament was on Thursday versus the Lago Vista Vikings. Cameron was defeated by Lago Vista, losing 2-1. The second game for the Yoemen was on Friday against the Hempstead Bobcats, and Cameron defeated the Bobcats 2-1.
The Yoemen put themselves on the scoreboard first with a penalty goal by Homero Najera (10) for 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Cameron tried to double their lead in the 16th minute but Andres Vargas (9) missed a shot on goal. Hempstead tried to make a push in the same minute of the half but failed to score due to a save by Xavier Gilmon (00). Hempstead kept pushing and scored a goal in the 19th minute to tie the score at 1. The Bobcats tried to take the lead but failed due to a great save by Gilmon in the 25th minute.
The teams went into halftime with the score knotted at 1-1. The second half was very even as neither team could gain much momentum. The Yoemen pulled away late when Cameron scored on a free kick by Vargas off an assist by Najera to take a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute.
Hempstead had a chance to tie the game late in the second half with a free kick opportunity in the last seconds. The Bobcats were unsuccessful and the Yoemen won the match 2-1.
Cameron’s final game of the weekend was on Saturday against the La Grange Leopards. The teams finished the game with a 1-1 tie. Cameron began district play on Tuesday January 14 against the Salado Eagles. Cameron was shut out by Salado, losing 4-0.
With this loss, Cameron has an overall record of 1-2-1.
Up next, the Yoemen will travel to take on the La Grange Leopards. The game will be Friday, Jan. 17, and is set to start at 5 p.m.
