Yoemen begin season with win over Milano, close loss to Mexia
The Cameron Yoemen basketball team got off to a great start over the Thanksgiving holiday as they went on the road to defeat the Milano Eagles 89-73 in their season opener.
Phaibian Bynaum came out on fire scoring 18 points. Pharrell Hemphill was also great with 17 points and 11 rebounds. J.W. Hollas was close to scoring a triple double with 17 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds.
The Yoemen then took on the Mexia Blackcats for their first home game of the season on Nov. 30, where they would be defeated 90-78.
The first quarter stayed even as neither team could really pull ahead. Mexia tried to pull away some as they gained a 19-15 lead. The Yoemen tightened the gap with a successful three-point play by Phaibian Bynaum (5) for a 23-21 deficit, which would be the score at the end of the first quarter.
The Yoemen kept up their intensity with a transition layup by J.W. Hollas (3) for 31-29 game, then he would drill a deep three pointer a 33-32 game. Mexia continued to fight off Cameron but a three by Trayjen Wilcox (13) made the score 37-35. The Yoemen took back the lead 39-37 on layup by Javoun Goldsby (11) and then started to gain some momentum. Halftime would end with the score 47-42 with Cameron in the lead.
Cameron started to pull away as they extended their lead to 57-48 and eventually a double digit 61-51 lead on free throws by Colby Wilson (32). The Black Cats tried to go on a scoring run on their own before the end of the third quarter, which ended with Cameron leading 63-59. Mexia came back to make the score 69-66, and later took the lead 73-72. The deficit for the Yoemen grew to 82-75 and Mexia never looked back as they handed Cameron a 90-78 defeat.
Up next, the Yoemen will be participating in an in-season tournament this weekend hosted by West High School. On Thursday they will take on the Grandview Zebras then the Teague Lions, then on Friday they will face the Troy Trojans.
