Yoemen celebrate seniors
The Cameron Yoemen boys’ basketball team traveled to take on the Thrall Tigers on Friday, Jan. 24. Cameron was defeated by Thrall, losing in a 40-37 heartbreaker.
The Yoemen returned home to host the Rogers Eagles on Tuesday, Jan. 28, on senior night, where they honored their five seniors - Lyndon Stifflemire, LeRon Mathis, RJ Wagnon, Damon Flemings, and Kedren Anderson. Cameron fell to Rogers, losing 55-39.
Cameron had a rough start to the game and trailed 5-0. The Yoemen broke the drought with a floater by TJ Brassfield (1) to make the score 5-2. That was followed with a basket by Damon Flemings (5) to close the gap to 5-4. Rogers pulled ahead 10-4, but Cameron responded with a basket by Flemings for a 10-6 deficit. The Yoemen showed grit with an offensive rebound and layup by Kelton Driska (15) to keep the score tight at 12-9. The first quarter ended with Cameron trailing 14-9.
The first points of the second quarter for Cameron came from a three point make by D’Allen Wilcox (3) to make the score 16-12. The Eagles jumped out ahead 21-14, then Cameron tightened the score at 21-18 with a layup by Kedren Anderson (4). Rogers responded with an 8-0 spurt and went into halftime leading 29-18.
The first points of the third quarter for Cameron came from a basket by Flemings for a 31-20 deficit. Flemings put the team on his back with another layup to trail 33-24. Rogers finished with an 8-6 run to finish the third quarter ahead 41-30. The Yoemen had a tough start to the fourth quarter, trailing 45-30. Cameron broke the drought with a three pointer by Flemings to make it a 45-33 deficit. That was soon followed with a three point make by Wilcox to make the score 47-36. Rogers finished the game with an 8-3 surge to hand the Yoemen a 55-39 defeat.
With this loss, Cameron has a record of 3-22 and a district record of 0-9. Cameron will not play on Friday as it will be their off day. Up next, the Yoemen will travel to take on the Lexington Eagles. The game will be on Tuesday, Feb. 4, and tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
