Yoemen claim third seed for playoffs
The Cameron Yoemen basketball team traveled to take on the Rockdale Tigers on Friday, Feb. 10. The Yeomen defeated Rockdale in a 46-44 nailbiter.
Cameron struggled early to get the offense going and fell behind 5-0. Tyrone Blaylock (33) helped Cameron get on the scoreboard with a layup at the 2 minute mark to make the score 5-2. The struggles still continued as Cameron trailed 10-4. The Yoemen would get a layup by Blaylock to make it a 10-6 deficit, which would be the score at the end of the first quarter.
The first quarter woes followed Cameron into the second quarter and they fell behind 15-9. Cameron would fight back and made the score 15-13, then would tie the score at 18 on a layup by Blaylock. Rockdale finished the quarter on a 5-0 run and went into halftime leading 23-20. The third quarter started with a layup by Connor Barton (15) for a 23-22 score.
Cameron kept themselves alive with a clutch three pointer by Barton for a one point 28-27 deficit. The Yoemen would take the lead with a big layup by Charlie Mayer (4) for a score of 28-24. The Tigers clawed back and tied the score at 32, then Cameron answered with a on layup by Mayer to give the Yoemen a 34-32 lead. The third quarter ended with Cameron ahead 37-34.
The fourth quarter started with a layup by Braylan Drake (1) for a 39-34 lead. That would be followed with a three pointer by JW Hollas (3) to widen the lead to 42-34. The Tigers would try to mount a comeback but was stopped with a three point shot by Trayjen Wilcox (12) to make it a 45-40 lead. Rockdale had a chance for a buzzer beater in the end, but Cameron held strong and would win 46-44.
The Yoemen finished their season on Tuesday against the Troy Trojans. The Yoemen pulled out a narrow 44-42 victory over Troy in their regular season finale to claim the three-seed in the district for the playoffs.
They will take on the Franklin Lions on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at Bryan High School, 3450 Campus Drive in Bryan. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
