Yoemen get district win over McGregor
The Cameron Yoemen sent the homecoming crowd home happy with an impressive 55-27 victory over the McGregor Bulldogs on Friday night.
Cameron received the ball to start the game. The Yoemen started quickly with a 62-yard touchdown shovel pass from quarterback Cade Hubnik (12) to Tim Grice (4) to take an early 7-0 lead. The Cameron defense bent a little and allowed a 30-yard run, but didn’t break and held McGregor to a 45-yard field goal. The field goal was good to make the score 7-3.
Cameron returned their offense to the field and responded with an impressive 58-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Hubnik to Antonio Vargas (2) to take a 14-3 lead.
McGregor returned to the field on offense and drove down the field with a 36-yard pass. The Bulldogs fought back and soon scored on a 17-yard touchdown catch to close the gap to 14-10.
The Yoemen offense faced a challenge with a fourth and 1, and converted the play on a QB sneak from Hubnik. They faced another fourth down on the same drive and converted once again. Cameron continued their momentum and scored on an incredible 26-yard touchdown catch by Brody Aguirre (34) for a 21-10 lead. The Yoemen defense was caught napping and gave up a 50-yard pass. The first quarter ended with Cameron leading 21-10.
McGregor scored first in the second quarter with a 40-yard field goal to make the score 21-13. The Yoemen offense faced yet another fourth down with a fourth and 7, and converted on a clutch 20-yard pass from Hubnik to Vargas. Cameron was held to a 28-yard field goal attempt by Homero Najera (10), which was good to make it a 24-13 advantage. McGregor returned to the field on offense and marched down the field aided with a 41-yard pass.
The Bulldogs responded and scored on a 19-yard touchdown catch to trail 24-20. The Yoemen offense answered in a big way with an explosive 92-yard touchdown run by Grice to widen their lead 31-20. Camerons defense came back on the field and held strong, forcing a three and out. The Yoemen defense had to quickly return to the field following an interception thrown by Hubnik. The defense stood tall and forced the Bulldogs into a fourth and 1. McGregor went for the fourth down conversion and failed, causing a turnover on downs. Cameron headed into halftime winning 31-20.
Cameron kicked off to start the second half. The Yoemen defense began the third quarter with a bang as Damon Flemings (17) recovered a McGregor fumble and returned it for touchdown and a 38-20 lead. The quarter became stagnant for a brief time with three consecutive drives ending in a punt.
Cameron’s offense broke the drought with a 44-yard touchdown shovel pass to Hubnik to Grice to take a commanding 45-20 lead. The Yoemen special teams joined in on the action and recovered a fumbled kickoff return. Cameron tried to take advantage of the turnover starting with a 16-yard catch by Tra’veon Myles (6). The third quarter ended with Cameron ahead 45-20.
The Yoemen opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 28-yard field goal by Najera for 48-20 lead. The Cameron defense began to bend as they gave up a fourth and 13. That was soon followed with a 21-yard touchdown pass for McGregor to tighten the score 48-27. Cameron returned to the field on offense and tried to answer back. However, their drive stalled and they settled for a 38-yard field goal try which was missed, keeping the score at 48-27.
The Yoemen defense responded and created another turnover with a 27-yard pick six interception by Vargas for a whopping 55-27 lead. Camerons defense helped seal the game with another interception, this one by Aguirre, and the Yoemen drained the remaining clock to win the game 55-27.
Cade Hubnik was phenomenal in his return, throwing for 307 yards and four touchdowns, along with rushing for 57 yards. Brody Aguirre was fantastic, catching three passes for 36 yards and a touchdown, along with catching an interception on defense. Antonio Vargas was also a double threat, catching five passes for 88 yards and a touchdown, along with catching an interception on defense. Tim Grice was unstoppable, rushing for 91 yards and a touchdown, along with catching seven passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
With this victory, Cameron now has a record of 1-5 and a district record of 1-0. Next up for the Yoemen, they will remain home for a matchup with the Troy Trojans. The game will be Friday, Oct. 18, and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
