Yoemen get first district win over Rogers
The Yoemen basketball team got a win and a loss over the last week. The Yoemen hosted the Jarrell Cougars on Friday, Dec. 15, and fell to Jarrell, losing 71-59. On Tuesday, Dec. 19, Cameron stayed home to host the Rogers Eagles for their district opener. The Yoemen were victorious, winning 48-42.
The Yoemen started strong with a 5-2 lead aided by a three pointer and a layup by Damon Flemings (5). Cameron continued to show range with a three pointer by Braylan Drake (1) for an early 8-4 lead, which was followed with a fastbreak layup by Kason Goolsby (3) to make the score 10-4. The first quarter ended with Cameron ahead 10-7.
Cameron started the second quarter slowly as Rogers clawed back to take the lead 11-10. The Yoemen answered and took the lead right back at 12-11 with a layup by Cody Webb (12). Rogers had a scoring spurt and went up on Cameron 18-12, but the Yoemen broke the drought with a big three pointer from Brayden Williams (11) to make it an 18-15 deficit, which was the score going into halftime. The first points of the third quarter came from a layup by Goolsby to close the gap to 18-17. That was followed up with a huge layup by Webb to retake the lead 19-18. The two teams would battle back and forth and stay even for most of the quarter as neither team could pull away. The Yoemen began to gain some separation with a fastbreak layup by Flemings for a 30-26 lead. The third quarter ended with Cameron ahead 33-28 after a clutch buzzer beating three-pointer by Drake.
The first points for Cameron in the fourth quarter came from a basket by Flemings to stay ahead 35-32. The Eagles made it a one point game at 35-34, but Cameron answered with a huge three pointer by Kevin Sprinkles Jr (21) to make the score 38-34. The Yoemen increased their lead to double digits at 44-34 on a layup by Flemings. Rogers clawed their way back to close the gap to 45-42, but Cameron broke the drought with a crucial layup by Flemings off an amazing assist by Drake to increase the lead to 47-42. The Yoemen would hold strong to win 48-42 and kick off district play with a victory. With this win, Cameron now has an overall record of 9-7.
Up next, the Yoemen will participate in the MT Rice tournament hosted by Midway High School. The tournament will take place Thursday, Dec. 28, through Saturday, Dec. 30, and the opponents and game times are yet to be announced.
