Yoemen get win over Lexington, fall to McGregor
The Yoemen basketball team got one loss and one win over the last week.
They traveled to take on the Lexington Eagles on Friday, Feb. 2. The Yoemen were victorious, beating Lexington 58-56.
On Tuesday, Feb. 6, Cameron returned home to host the McGregor Bulldogs. The Yoemen came up empty against McGregor, losing 48-41.
The Yoemen began the game with some early struggles, trailing McGregor 11-1. Cameron broke the drought with a layup by Cody Webb (12) for an 11-3 deficit. The first quarter ended with Cameron behind 13-5.
The Yoemen began the second quarter playing much better with two consecutive three pointers from Braylan Drake (1) that close the gap to 13-11. Drake then tied the score at 13 with two free throws. The Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run to surge ahead 21-13, which would be the score going into halftime. Cameron started the third quarter slowly and trailed 27-13. Cameron’s first points of the quarter came from a three pointer by Drake to make the score 27-16. The Yoemen continued to show range with a three pointer by Kason Goolsby (3) to trail 31-22. That was soon followed with a basket by Damon Flemings (5) to cut the deficit 35-26, which would be the score at the end of the third quarter.
The first points of the fourth quarter came from free throws by Flemings to make the score 35-28. The Yoemen tried to close the gap with a three pointer from Drake to only trail 37-31. McGregor grew their lead to double digits at 41-31, however, Flemings answered that with a steal and a fastbreak layup to make the score 41-33. Cameron tried to rally back with a three pointer by Flemings to close the gap 46-41, but it wasn’t enough and Cameron would lose 48-41.
With this loss, Cameron has an overall record of 15-15 and a district record of 6-6. Up next, the Yoemen will stay home to host the Rockdale Tigers. The game will be on Friday, Feb. 9, and tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
