Yoemen move to 1-1 after loss to Lorena
On Tuesday, Jan. 2, Cameron stayed home to host the Lorena Leopards. The Yoemen were defeated by Lorena, losing 51-47.
The Yoemen started strong with a three pointer by Damon Flemings (5) for a 5-2 lead. Cameron stayed ahead with a layup by Kelton Driska (15) to make it a 9-6 lead, which would be the score at the end of a low scoring first quarter.
Lorena started the second quarter with a three pointer to tie the score at 9, then continued with a 7-2 run to lead 16-11. Cameron continued to fight with a layup by Cody Webb (12) off an assist by Driska to close the gap to 16-14.
The Yoemen showed great transition play with a fastbreak layup by Kason Goolsby (3) to make it a 20-16 deficit. Cameron went into halftime down 20-17.
The first points for Cameron in the third quarter came from free throws by Flemings for a 20-19 deficit.
The Yoemen stayed aggressive with a big three pointer by Goolsby to tie the game at 22, which was soon followed with a layup by Webb to retake the lead 24-22. The Leopards responded with a 9-0 run to take back the lead 31-24.
Cameron broke the drought with a layup by Webb for a 31-26 deficit. The third quarter ended with Cameron trailing 36-30. The first points for Cameron in the fourth quarter came from a layup by Flemings to trail 40-32.
Lorena began to pull away to lead 44-36. The Yoemen fought their way back and scored on a big layup by Braylan Drake (1) to tighten the score 46-41.
Goolsby kept the team alive with a huge three pointer to close the gap to 48-45, but it would not be enough, and they would lose 51-47.
With this loss, Cameron now has a record of 10-11 and a district record of 1-1.
The weekend of Dec. 28-30, the Cameron Yoemen basketball team participated in the MT Rice tournament hosted by Midway High School.
The Yoemen finished the weekend with a record of 1-3.
They played one game on Thursday against the Glen Rose Tigers. Cameron fell to the Tigers, losing 71-37.
Cameron played two games on Friday, the first game coming against the Waco Midway Panthers JV team. The Yoemen were defeated by Midway 64-57.
The second game was a matchup between the West Trojans, and the Yoemen defeated West 51-48. Their final game was a matchup between the Groesbeck Goats on Saturday. The Yoemen fell to the Goats, losing 48-40.
Up next, the Yoemen will travel to take on the Little River Academy Bumblebees. The game will be on Friday, Jan. 5 and tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
